Automatic movements
In 1931, Rolex offered the first self-winding wristwatch. This revolutionary innovation made watch-winding unnecessary and more importantly eliminated the problem of over-winding a watch and harming its movement.
Rolex was also the first watch company to manufacture a wristwatch water resistant to 100 m (330 ft).
Collections
Rolex also produces specific models appropriate for deep-sea diving, mountain climbing and aviation. These sport models included the Rolex Submariner and the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Sea Dweller. Other models, such as the Explorer and Explorer II were developed specifically for explorers who would navigate rough mountainous terrain. The Rolex GMT Master was originally designed in the early 1950′s for Pan-Am Airways to help its pilots resolve the problem of crossing multiple time-zones.
